Why Does POTS Cause Brain Fog?

A healthy autonomic nervous system responds by adjusting your heart rate and blood vessels to keep enough blood circulating to the brain.
With POTS, this response does not work normally. Your heart rate may rise significantly when you stand, while blood can pool in your legs and abdomen. Changes in blood flow to the brain, combined with the physical strain of maintaining circulation, may contribute to problems with concentration, memory, and mental clarity.
Several factors can make this worse:
Reduced Blood Flow to the Brain
For many people with POTS, having less blood flowing to the brain while standing is common. The changes in blood flow may cause dizziness and make it harder to think clearly.
Increased Heart Rate and Physical Stress
One of POTS' main characteristics is that it causes a rapid heart rate. Your body may work harder to maintain adequate circulation while you are upright. This can leave you feeling physically and mentally drained, making it harder to focus on demanding tasks.
Autonomic Nervous System Activation
POTS affects how the body controls automatic functions like heart rate and blood flow. When you stand, your body may work harder to keep blood flowing properly. This can trigger a fight-or-flight response, causing a fast heartbeat, shakiness, feeling on edge, and trouble concentrating.
Dehydration and Low Blood Volume
Not having enough fluid in your body can make orthostatic symptoms worse. Some people with POTS also have lower circulating blood volume, especially in the morning.
Together, these factors can make it more difficult for your body to maintain effective circulation when you stand, potentially worsening brain fog.

Reduce Cognitive Overload
